A triangular indentation is cut where the lapel joins the collar of a jacket. Peaked Lapel. A broad V-shaped lapel that points up and out just below the collar line of a jacket. Piping. A narrow fabric consisting of a flat edge that can be sewn into a seam with a thicker exposed cord. Used to finish raw edges on material or for decorative purposes. Pleats. Folds of fabric held in place to create fullness. Ruching. Areas of fullness gathered to form a rippled effect. Shawl Collar. A collar turned down to form a continuous line around the back of the neck to the front. Cut in one single piece, it eliminates the need for a seam between the collar and the lapel. Smocking. An embroidery technique used to gather fabric so it can stretch. Practical for form-fitted, flexible garments. Trapunto Stitching. A type of stitching in which quilted designs stand in high relief against a lower background. Single stitches outline the pattern. Tulip Skirt. A skirt that is slightly fuller at the top, with pleats or shirring. Narrows at hem. Sateen. A strong, lustrous cotton or cotton blend fabric, commonly used in summer suiting. Space Dye. A yarn dyeing or printing process in which individual strands receive more than one color at irregular intervals. Produces a random effect.
